Richmond Park - The Red Deer Rut At 2:30pm - 5:30pm |
|
Where? Richmond Park Queens Road, Richmond London, UK |
For October's Photowalk London, we're going to Richmond Park to witness the Red Deer Rut which should be in full swing by the end of October.
This is an opportunity to watch wildlife (fairly) close-up. During this annual spectacle, stags round the females up into harems and then fight for the right to mate.
As ever, everyone is welcome regardless of equipment or experience and there's no cost. While we're a group of people meeting up to take some photographs, it's important to emphasise on this occasion that it is just an informal gathering, and you are responsible for your own safety while watching the rut. Some of us do have previous experience of watching wildlife and of watching the rut in the park, but this isn't a course or a workshop, just an afternoon where we meet up and enjoy taking some photographs.
Obviously it's important to recognise that the deer are wild animals in a heightened state of emotion. Be prepared when you select clothes to get 'low and slow' on the day (you may get dirty/muddy so don't wear your best suit or frock). Likewise it's sensible to select clothes in dark greens and browns (black works too). The most important thing is to avoid light or bright colours.
Many thousands of people watch the rut every year without incident, but it is important to both us and the deer that our actions don't disturb them.
We'll meet at the car park by Richmond Gate (on Queen's Road, inside the park) at 2.30pm and hang around until late afternoon. @wildlifephotog will probably be there earlier in the day so it's worth tweeting him if you want to go earlier to arrange to meet up. And don't tell @louisehector that he's planning to go out early - it's their wedding anniversary!
Afterwards some of us will probably go off for a beverage or a snack somewhere nearby, but you're welcome to leave when you wish.
Photowalk London is a meetup on the last Saturday of each month - in November we're going to St Katherine's Dock (http://www.twtvite.com/PwL2011...) and in December we're off to Borough Market (first thing in the morning, on New Year's Eve).
